People in Conception Bay South are without a pool for the next 14 to 16 weeks because the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system failed and needs to be replaced.

“Rather than proceed with a Band-Aid solution that may or may not have fixed the problem, council opted to proceed with the replacement now,” C.B.S. Mayor Terry French said Thursday.

“While we recognize that this will be a disappointment and inconvenience for many of our pool users, and apologize for that, we feel that proceeding with the full emergency replacement at this time is in the best long-term interests of the pool and those who use it.”

The Recreation Complex has two separate HVAC systems, so all other areas of the facility are not affected by the pool closure. All other activities, such as fitness classes and playgroup, will continue as usual.

It’s an unanticipated closure, but the town council said it will use the shutdown as an opportunity to do some other needed upgrades to the facility, such as making the family change room more accessible, and upgrading the pump room.

Meanwhile, pool management is working to ensure affected swim groups can use other facilities.

Updates on the progress of repairs will be posted to the town’s website and social media pages.
