Following a public hearing on the proposed harbourfront development in March, St. John’s city council made its final approval of the controversial Parkhotel on Monday.

While air rights are still required for a part of the development that will extend over the sidewalk, Mayor Danny Breen said the city has given the proponent the indication that it will approve the air rights.

Breen said now that approvals are in place, the proponent will come back to the city with a final design, and from now on the city will be dealing only with the more technical aspects of the development. He said there will be no further public consultation.

Council vote on the development was split, with a narrow approval in a 6-5 vote.

Voting in favour of the development were Mayor Danny Breen and Councillors Wally Collins, Jamie Korab, Deanne Stapleton, Debbie Hanlon and Sandy Hickman.

Voting against the development were Deputy Mayor Sheilagh O’Leary and Councillors Ian Froude, Hope Jamieson, Dave Lane and Maggie Burton.
