Contract awarded to construct new facilities at Jubilee Field in Corner Brook

The old clubhouse at Jubilee Field will soon have a date with demolition. The City of Corner Brook earlier this week awarded the $1.8 million contract to build the new facility to Brook Construction Ltd.
Brook Construction was the lowest of four bidders. The other three – Tech Construction, Emmanual Construction and Can-Am Platforms Ltd. – had submitted bids between more than $2.14 million and nearly $2.33 million.
The contract includes demolishing and disposal of the current, 102-square metre masonry canteen and dressing room building. The structure has served the Corner Brook baseball community for more than 50 years.
The contract also calls for the removal of the wooden-framed scorekeeper’s hut and associated storage sheds, as well as some trees to make way for the new facility.
The contractor will not only build a new 345-square metre clubhouse, but will also erect a new scorekeeping hut and complete all mechanical and electrical systems for both buildings and other aspects of the ball park.
The contract terms state work must be substantially done within 175 working days of the contact being awarded.
The city says it hopes work will commence soon, so the buildings can be closed in before snowfall and ready for use by the baseball community by June 2020. The city said it should know more about the construction start date this week.
The Corner Brook Baseball Association is hoping the work will not impact its plans to finish off the current baseball season in its entirety. The Corner Brook Molson Men’s Senior Baseball League had initially planned a shortened 18-game regular season schedule, plus two playoff rounds, in anticipation of having to be off the field by Aug. 31.
When it became clearer they had more time, the four-team league expanded its regular season to 24 games, the same amount it normally plays each summer.
The last regular season game will be played this week and the first of two best-of-5 playoff rounds starts next week with the regular season champion Veitch Physiotherapy Aces taking on the fourth-place Wing ‘N’ It Marlins and the second-place Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks battling the West Side Monarchs in the other semifinal.
Frank Humber, who is charge of field operations with the association, said the league will adjust the playoff format if the contractor informs the association it needs access to the field earlier than anticipated or if inclement weather unavoidably prolongs the league’s postseason.
