CORNER BROOK, N.L. — The Corner Brook Civic Centre may have to be closed again until investigators with Service NL can conduct an investigation into an ammonia leak in the centre’s ice plant.

The leak, which happened on Thursday evening, was contained to the ice plant and repairs took place Thursday night.

The centre closed for the night but was reopened Friday morning.

Mayor Jim Parsons said early Friday afternoon that while everything appears to be OK at the centre, that Service NL still wants to conduct its own investigation.

Attempts were being made to get an inspector to the site either later Friday or by Saturday.

Parsons said an employee with CIMCO Refrigeration, the company that provides maintenance for the plant, was also enroute to the city to make sure everything was OK with the system.

Parsons said the city was waiting for that to occur before making a decision of what to do at the centre. If the building remains open until the Service NL inspection is completed the ice plant would have to be shut down and the ice would be lost. By closing the building, he said the ice could be saved.

Closing the centre would mean that two Corner Brook Winter Carnival events — the chili cookoff and craft fair— scheduled to take place there Saturday would have to be relocated.
