Justice Garrett Handrigan didn’t stray from the recommendations of the Crown as he sentenced two Corner Brook men for the 2015 stabbing another man Thursday.
Handrigan gave Dillon Bourgeois five years in prison and handed a three-year sentence to Paxton Sheahan for their respective roles in the attack on Jonathan Park just over two years ago.
Crown attorney Alana Dwyer had asked for five years for Bourgeois, while defence lawyer Karen Rehner had asked for four years. The three years requested by Dwyer for Sheahan was part of a joint submission on sentencing by her and Sheahan’s defence counsel, Jonathan Regan.
Park was stabbed a dozen times by Bourgeois with a knife as Sheahan restrained the victim. The assault caused serious injuries to Park and nearly killed him.
The assault occurred not long after Park and Bourgeois had been in a fight outside a downtown Corner Brook bar earlier the same night.
Bourgeois and Sheahan entered guilty pleas to aggravated assault Tuesday. They had also been charged with attempted murder, but those charges were withdrawn after the guilty pleas had been entered and a trial averted.
Bourgeois also pleaded guilty to breaching a court order to have no communication with Sheahan after their arrest. The court heard the two had a casual conversation while in the Corner Brook lockup awaiting a court appearance.
Sheahan also pleaded guilty to breaching a probation order he was under at the time of the stabbing.
Both men have been in custody since their arrests in late October 2015. They will each get 1.5 days credit for each day already served and have that time subtracted from the sentence handed out Thursday.
Sheahan will still need to serve 166 days as he served a sentence for an unrelated crime while on remand.
