The province paid close to $870,000 in legal fees over five years as a result of a pair of lawsuits related to the province’s e-gaming saga.

According to a Freedom of Information request filed by P.E.I. New Democratic Party Leader Joe Byrne, the total legal fees paid between January 2015 and February 2020 added up to $868,334.

The province recovered $201,729 in costs due to the dismissal of these lawsuits, meaning the province paid a net $666,605 in legal fees.

Byrne said he filed the freedom of information request because he felt there are still unanswered questions about the e-gaming saga.

He said it was good to have some answers on the tally of legal fees, but he said other questions about transparency remain.
