The number of cases of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador has almost doubled in one day.

Chief Medical Officer Janice Fitzgerald says of the 32 new cases, 31 of them are in the Eastern Health region. The other is in the Western Health area, the first for that region.

Of the 61 cases in the Eastern Health region, she said, 44 originated from intermingling last week at a funeral at Caul’s Funeral Home.

Eight others were travel related. The others are under investigation.

Fitzgerald pleaded for patience from those who’ve been tested and are aawaiting their results.

“Public Health is working tirelessly to get results back as soon as possible,” she said.

Premier Dwight Ball added authorities now have the option of taking away driver’s licences from anyone who does not obey orders to self-quarantine.
