Dave Aker locks up Mount Pearl mayoralty as ballots being counted in N.L. municipal elections

It looks like the new mayor of Mount Pearl will be Dave Aker.

Andy Wells' campaign headquarters in the race for mayor of St. John's.
A number of people have gathered in the council chambers at Mount Pearl to await the results of tonight's vote.
Acclaimed mayor of Conception Bay South Terry French chats with people at C.B.S. town hall in Long Pond Tuesday night.

After 25 out of 32 polls Aker leads Travis Faulkner with 3,771 votes to 906.
Jim Locke leads all council candidates with 3,406 followed by Lucy Stoyles and Andrew Ledwell with 3,088  and 3,060 respectively.
Next are Isabelle Fry, Andrea Power and Bill Antle.

In Mount Pearl, a number of people have gathered in the council chambers at Mount Pearl to await the results of tonight's vote.

Two big screens have been set up in the chambers to display results as they come in.

Some 13 people are in the running for council seats, besides the mayor's race.

In Conception Bay South, people are gathered at the town hall.

Reporters James McLeod and Kenn Oliver are following the St. John’s race, while Glen Whiffen is in Mount Pearl and Rosie Mullaley is following Paradise and C.B.S.

Beth Penney is following races in surrounding towns while the SaltWire Network is following elections around Newfoundland.

In St. John's, at the Danny Breen headquarters, among supporters, there seems to be quiet confidence that Breen has the mayor's race all wrapped up. Most people, including Breen himself are just milling about while they chat and enjoy drinks and snacks.

The Ward 1 councillor is vying for the mayor's chair against former mayor Andy Wells and newcomer Renee Sharpe.
Meanwhile, there are 15 people at Wells's headquarters in what appears to be a low-key atmosphere.

As of around 10:15 p.m., the first results from St. John's were expected in 20 minutes'  time.
