The Town of Deer Lake plans to gradually reopen town-operated buildings beginning Saturday.

Two weeks ago, the town council temporarily closed its recreational facilities and offices after a cluster of COVID-19 cases, which included one town employee, began to appear in the town.

A second town employee also later tested positive for the coronavirus. Both work at the town office.

In a news release posted on the town’s Facebook page and website on Wednesday, the town said the Hodder Memorial Recreation Centre will reopen to the public on Saturday.

User groups are reminded to review the safety measures previously established for arenas and outlined on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador COVID-19 website. That includes the use of masks in indoor settings.

The town office will resume operations on Monday.

The town says businesses that had been asked to close can reopen based upon their own unique considerations and time that may be required to do so.

“The co-operation and dedication of Deer Lake residents in controlling the spread of this virus in our community is truly remarkable,” Mayor Dean Ball stated in a news release.

“This virus has changed our daily lives significantly. This surely hasn’t been an easy time for anyone. I am confident that our united commitment and community spirit will carry us forward as we deal with the COVID-19 virus.”

The release also noted that the compassion and empathy shown to those most affected was remarkable and speaks to the kind-hearted nature of the residents in Deer Lake.

Council also expressed gratitude to the staff at Western Health and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, and noted the co-operation of the premier and the chief medical officer of health.

“Their assistance and guidance through these very difficult days for residents of Deer Lake has not been forgotten,” the release stated.
