It was an unusual call when firefighters were dispatched to rescue six ducklings that had fallen into a storm drain near Bonaventure Avenue Wednesday night.
The ducklings were discovered in the drain by the cook at the nearby retirement home after he noticed the ducklings had gone missing. The mother had built a nest near the home and was still in the area.
The cook’s co-worker, Mary Connors, then took on the task of making calls to have the ducklings rescued. Firefighters from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department arrived and were able to lift the grate to rescue the tiny ducklings but the mother was nowhere to be found.
Personnel from the provincial wildlife department were also on scene but a search for the mother proved fruitless.
The wildlife personnel took the ducklings to their base at Paddy’s Pond overnight in hopes the parent would be spotted so they could reunite the family.
