A driver was taken to hospital Christmas Day afternoon for medical treatment, but his injuries weren't beleived to be serious after a single-vehicle accident in west end St. John's.
Capt. Blair Mayo of the St. John's Regional Fire Department's Brookfield station said they received the call at 1:44 p.m.. The driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.
The accident happened on Waterford Bridge Road at the intersection of Cowan Avenue as the vehicle was travelling south on Cowan Avenu. It crossed through the intersection before hitting a tree.
On scene, they found the driver was still in his vehicle. He had to be removed through the rear windshield by the responding crews from the west end fire station. As the vehicle was leaking gas, they set up a foam line to spray down the vehicle as a precautionary measure.
First responders said they suspect the vehicle may have gone airborne due to where the tree was broken off, and there were no brake skid marks on the roadway or tire tracks on the grassy area by the trees.
