Fatality, multiple collisions mar weekend on Avalon Peninsula

A traffic fatality and multiple collisions marred the weekend and kept rescue officials busy on the Avalon Peninsula.

A 45-year-old woman was killed in a moose-vehicle collision Saturday night on the TCH near Ocean Pond.

Other collisions saw a driver fleeing on foot, another taken into custody on suspicion of being impaired, a rollover on Blackmarsh Road and two more incidents possibly caused by heavy rain and hydroplaning. In those incidents on Sunday, two vehicles left the TCH, extensively damaging the vehicles but there were no serious injuries at either scene.

Firefighters with the St. John's Regional fire department were called out after a vehicle rolled over after it left the TCH Sunday afternoon. The driver of the van (left) escaped injury while the van appeared moderately damaged in the incident.

One RCMP officer told The Telegram that there were four collisions in the space of three hours on the TCH west of St. John's.

In Monday morning's overnight report, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said a 22-year-old male driver was charged with impaired driving and failing the breathalyzer as a result of the Blackmarsh Road/Topsail Road rollover, which happened shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday. The driver had struck a stop sign before the rollover, police said.

The man was released to appear in court and there were no injuries.
