A father and son appeared in provincial court in St. John's late Friday afternoon, accused of forcing their way into a man's home earlier in the day, beating him with a baseball bat and kidnapping him.
Stephen Alphonsus Maloney, 55, and Mitchell Maloney, 23, wore white Tyvek suits when they were escorted into the courtroom to face a judge. They will remain in custody until a bail hearing on Tuesday.
Both men have been charged with home invasion, assault with a weapon (a baseball bat), assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and kidnapping with the intent to confine a person against their will.
The RNC says an officer patrolling Topsail Road was flagged down around 10:30 a.m. Friday by the 23-year-old victim, who remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sources say the Maloneys knew the man, and believed he had stolen items from them. They allegedly kidnapped him in a vehicle in an effort to retrieve the items. Sources tell The Telegram the man escaped from the vehicle in traffic and flagged down police.
