An alleged death threat on a woman on the province’s east coast had police make a high-risk traffic stop on the weekend on the west coast, according to the RCMP.
Sunday, about 9:20 a.m., a high-risk traffic stop was conducted by the RCMP emergency response team with assistance from police dog services and officers from Bay St. George RCMP on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Stephenville in relation to an investigation by Ferryland RCMP.
Police in Ferryland received a report that a man made death threats to a woman in Bay Bulls, and was driving across the province on his way to the woman’s residence. Police say the man was reported to be in possession of a firearm.
According to police, the 34-year-old man tried to evade the traffic stop and collided with one of the emergency response team police vehicles. Both vehicles sustained minor damages.
According to a news release, the vehicle continued eastbound on the TCH and was stopped a short time later by police, who had set up a roadblock. The driver was arrested without further incident, police say.
He was held in police custody over the weekend, transported across the island and was to appeas in St. John’s provincial court Monday facing charges of flight from police, dangerous driving, assault and uttering threats.
The investigation is continuing.
