Fire at C.B.S. personal care home forces evacuation of seventeen residents

A fire at a personal care home in Conception Bay South forced the evacuation of seventeen of its residents early Friday morning.

Firefighters work outside the extension where the fire originated.

Conception Bay South fire department chief John Heffernan said they were called to the fire in one of two buildings at the Morgan personal care home and that firefighters assisted evacuating residents from the structure. His men then made their way into an extension of the building that was under renovation where they were met with heavy smoke and heat. The firefighters quickly knocked the fire down but stubborn hotspots in the attic kept them busy and on scene for another two hours. While firefighters dealt with the fire, the operators of the home were trying to find accommodations for the evacuees for at least the rest of the night until the damage could be assessed. A bus arrived on scene at about 3 a.m. to shuttle the residents once housing arrangements could be made. There were no injuries in the fire and no cause has been determined.
