A structure fire in west-end St. John’s damaged the front porch of a home but two people escaped unharmed Thursday evening.

The two women in the house apparently smelled smoke before noticing the porch on the home was on fire. The two were able to get out of the residence and called 911 to report the blaze.

When firefighters arrived, they found fire and smoke coming from the porch area and quickly deployed an attack line to extinguish the flames.

Damage from the fire was confined to the outside but firefighters had to remove some of the exterior walls to make sure the fire hadn’t spread inside.

No information was available as to what caused the fire.

The incident is under investigation.
