A fire at the Hotel Mount Pearl Christmas night caused fire and smoke damage to the kitchen area and sent smoke throughout the building.
Reports from the scene indicate the fire could have been much worse had it not been spotted by two people walking on the quiet street next to the closed hotel. The two reported black smoke coming from the rear of the building and when firefighters arrived just after 10 p.m., they immediately broke open a side door and ran a hose to the blaze.
A rear door had burned through and heat buildup from the fire had melted a light fixture located in another part of the kitchen. There was also damage to the exterior of the hotel near the burned door.
There were no employees or guests in the hotel as it had been closed since about 10 a.m. Christmas Eve.
The Incident is under investigation.
