A back-yard garage in Mount Pearl was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon in Mount Pearl.
The fire erupted in the garage on Mortimore Drive just before 6 p.m. and firefighters were reporting seeing heavy black smoke in the area several minutes before arriving on scene. Heavy smoke was pouring from the structure as firefighters deployed their attack lines. Minutes later, flames were seen pouring from the roof around a chimney and from an eave.
The garage owner was not in the structure at the time but had apparently been preparing to paint a car just before the fire started.
Firefighters were eventually able to open the garage door and fight the blaze from the inside as others climbed to the roof and vented the heavy smoke while battling the flames.
The blaze was brought under control but firefighters had to contend with a number of containers of flammable liquids. There was at least one vehicle in the building.
There were no injuries and no damage to any other structures.
