ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Fire destroyed a building at 92 Lemarchant Road in St. John's early Monday morning.

Acting platoon chief Roger Hounsell of the St. John’s Regional fire department said they received the call at about 1:20 a.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure. He said they laid some attack lines, surrounded the structure and knocked the blaze down fairly quickly.

Reports from the scene indicate flames were shooting six to seven metres in the air before fire trucks arrived on scene. At one point, flames also broke through the roof of the building as firefighters fought the flames from a fire escape and from overhead using an aerial ladder.

Fifteen people from Katherine House, a personal care home next door, were also evacuated and were being assisted by the Red Cross.

Hounsell said the building appeared to be under renovation.

There were no reports of injuries.
