A large fire that could be seen over a large part of St. John’s early Wednesday morning destroyed a house under construction and caused moderate damage to a second one..

The blaze was reported just before 2 a.m. on Larkhall Street and when firefighters arrived on scene, one house was fully engulfed in flames with the upper floors mostly incinerated already.

The intense heat from the fire could be felt across the street about 20 meters away, charring the house next door and melting its siding. Once firefighters started hosing down the blaze, it only took about twenty minutes to beat the flames down, leaving small spots of fire and steaming, burnt wood.

Platoon chief Rick DeHann of the St. John’s Regional fire department told The Telegram that there was no electricity connected to the structures and that the fire was considered suspicious.

There were no injuries.
