Firefighters were called to a serious structure fire in St. John’s at about 4:30 Friday morning.

Platoon chief Roger Hounsell said when the St. John’s Regional Fire Department arrived on scene, personnel found heavy smoke coming from the house at 198 Pleasant Street. Firefighters laid attack lines and entered the three-unit home and attacked the fire from the inside as heavy fire erupted from the rear of the house.

A ladder truck was used to get firefighters to the roof and supply water to fire hoses but as flames started pouring from the roof, the master stream was activated to flood the fire from above.

Firefighters also laid attack lines over high snowbanks to the rear of the home and could be seen breaking windows and cutting holes in the roof to ventilate the structure.

Hounsell said there was one person at home in one of the upstairs units at the time but that person had gotten out safely.

Heavy smoke was also blanketing a large area of the neighbourhood and parts of the downtown.

More photos to come and details will be provided as they become available.
