Firefighters were called to the area of Feildian Gardens on Pennywell Road Thursday night after an apparent act of vandalism caused an ammonia leak.

Residents in the area had reported smelling ammonia and when firefighters with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department arrived on scene, the gas was detected near the hockey rink but levels dropped to normal within minutes of their arrival.

The area around the rink was closed off until maintenance personnel arrived to examine the refrigeration equipment at the arena.

Reports from the scene indicate a vandal had damaged an emergency shut off valve on the system with a rock, causing the leak.

There were no injuries.

The incident is under investigation.
