Firefighters were called to a large fire at a metal recycling facility in St. John’s Monday afternoon.

The blaze started at about 1:30 p.m. when a scrap vehicle caught fire near a mound of other vehicles being recycled and the blaze spread quickly from there. Flames were shooting about ten meters into the sky as firefighters arrived on scene and smoke from the fire could be seen from all across the capital city.

The fire was brought under control within about twenty minutes and eventually extinguished.

There were no injuries.
