ST. JOHN’S, N.L.

The former commanding officer of the Bay Roberts RCMP detachment has been charged in connection with his handling of an incident last June in Upper Island Cove.

Sgt. Brent Hillier is facing charges of obstruction of justice and breach of trust, along with a charge under the Highway Traffic Act. His first appearance took place Friday, Jan. 25 at Harbour Grace Provincial Court. His case will return there for election and plea April 3.

According to a news release, the officer responded to a report on June 1 of a suspected impaired driver involved in a collision in Upper Island Cove. The driver was Hillier’s son. Four days later, the RCMP’s provincial command asked the provincial government to assign an external police force to investigate Hillier’s actions.

According to the release, the officer has been suspended with pay. RCMP NL said it will not comment further while the case goes before the courts.
