MOUNT PEARL, N.L. — Wayne Ralph, a former leader of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) in the Newfoundland and Labrador, has died.

He was 68.

Ralph joined the UFCW in the late 1980s and in a few years took over the leadership of the union local. His profile rose quickly when the UFCW battled the Fish, Food and Allied Workers’ Union to represent inshore fishermen and plant workers in the province.

It was a lively campaign between bitter union rivals, with the FFAW eventually winning out.

In 2003 Ralph tried his hand at politics by seeking the nomination as the Liberal candidate in Mount Pearl for that year’s provincial election.

Ralph’s funeral will be held on Saturday in Mount Pearl.
