ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Former Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Chief Robert P. Johnston is being remembered as a devoted officer, family man.
RNC Chief Joe Boland announced today on the RNC’s Facebook page that Johnston died Monday after a courageous battle with cancer.
“As a young boy growing up in Mount Pearl, Chief Johnston knew he wanted to be a police officer,” Boland said.
“Fortunately for us, the Newfoundland Constabulary recognized the potential and drive in this young man, and his esteemed career as a police officer began when he enrolled on May 7, 1979.”
Johnston had a significant career with the RNC, moving consistently through the ranks from Sergeant in 1988, Staff Sergeant in 1993, Inspector in 2002, and Deputy Chief in 2004.

On May 1, 2010, he was appointed the RNC’s 20th Chief of Police, a position he held until his retirement in 2014.
“Throughout his career, Chief Johnston was recognized for his outstanding service,” Boland said.
Johnston is a recipient of the 20- and 30-year Police Exemplary Service Awards, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals, and in 2012 His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, appointed Chief Johnston to the Order of Merit in the Officers’ Category.
“Johnston will be remembered as a loving and devoted spouse, father, grandfather, father-in-law, colleague and friend,” Boland said.
“Chief Johnston will always be an important part of the RNC’s history and has helped shape who we are today.”
Boland offered condolences to Johnston’s wife, Gloria, his daughters Sarah and Amanda, grandson Jack, son-in-law Matthew and all other members of his immediate and extended family.
