ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The RCMP says a  38-year-old high school teacher from Harbour Main was charged today for sexual offences that occurred while he was employed as a teacher at Roncalli Central High School in Avondale.

Noel Strapp is charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation for a number of incidents that allegedly occurred between 2014 and 2016. Police say the victim is a former student at Roncalli.

The investigation that led to the charges against Strapp’s began in November of 2019 when the RCMP in Holyrood was contacted by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, who had received the original report. That, in turn, led to what is described as “a lengthy investigation” by the RCMP’s General Investigation Section.

Strapp, who has been suspended from his teaching position since the onset of the investigation, was arrested and charged today before being released from custody on a number of conditions. He is scheduled to attend court March 2.

Strapp is well known in local rugby and wrestling circles. He was coach of Newfoundland and Labrador’s wrestling team at the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg, this after he had been named Sport Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2016 coach of the year for his work in wrestling.
