There are more foxes in Flatrock lately, and their presence has prompted government to issue a public advisory.
Fisheries and Land Resources officials are reminding people not to feed wildlife or leave unsecured food or garbage where animals can access it.
“Unsecured food and dumping of garbage are typically the root cause of wildlife conflicts in human populated areas,” reads a government news release issued Wednesday afternoon.
The release also states there are prohibitions on dumping garbage anywhere outside of designated municipal waste disposal facilities.
The department listed the following tips for pet owners – especially those living near wooded areas – to protect their pets:
- ensure there are no food attractants for wildlife
- keep pets within fenced yards and dogs on a leash or under close supervision while off leash in public areas
- ensure pets are vaccinated
The public is also urged to report any unusual behavior in wild or domestic animals to conservation officers, wildlife enforcement officers, veterinarians, police or public health officials.
