The difference in this cross-Canada journey is that it was completed in an electric car — a Chevy Bolt.

The couple decided to make the journey from Victoria, B.C., to Quidi Vidi to promote low environmental impact driving and zero waste. They began the journey on Canada Day with the desire to reach out to people across the country with the message that lifestyle changes can make a difference.

“As a grassroots organization promoting zero waste, it’s important for us to connect with regular Canadians. … A road trip allows us to reach people in their own communities and homes,” said Hetherington. “Bolt across Canada allows us to show that it is possible to make lifestyle changes that reduce environmental impact. And you can still enjoy life.”

Boyd said actions such as making wiser vehicle choices make a difference.

“We want to promote our emerging green highways … that are making it easier for Canadians to drive low-emission vehicles.”

Green Rock E.V.S. electric vehicle dealership hosted a gathering to cheer on the couple as they dipped their car’s wheels in the ocean. Afterwards, electric car owners around the city paraded through downtown to celebrate.
