ST. JOHN’S, N.L.

Over 100 students from Conne River, the Bonavista Peninsula and the Avalon Peninsula will converge at the Marine Institute’s flume tank at the Ridge Road campus in St. John’s on Saturday, Dec. 1.

They will be taking part in the 7th annual Model Boat Race.

The students will be using remote-controlled miniature vessels of their own design and construction.

For the first part of the competition, teams will navigate their boats through a slalom course of buoys. Then they’ll go head-to-head around the flume tank to determine whose boat is the fastest.

Schools participating in the event include Ascension Collegiate, Brookside Intermediate, Carbonear Collegiate, Clarenville High, Crescent Collegiate, Fatima Academy, Gonzaga High, Heritage Collegiate, St. Anne’s High and Roncalli Central High. Clarenville's Riverside Elementary is also taking part, marking the first time an elementary school has participated in the event.

The Marine Institute’s School of Maritime Studies and the Office of Student Recruitment coordinates the Model Boat Race.
