St. John’s city council has approved a concept plan for a six-acre park in the Galway neighbourhood, and has committed to a phased approach to build it — but funding for the park is not yet confirmed.
City council unanimously voted on Monday to refer phase one of the park’s construction “for consideration for funding” next year.
The land for the park, tentatively called Galways Village Green, will be provided in full by the developer, Galway Residential General Partnership. Funds for the park’s construction, however, falls to the city.
According to city documents, the developer wanted the first phase of construction to be completed this year and next. This phase would include an accessible playground, multi-purpose court and the parking lot.
“Under normal circumstances, staff may recommend that Phase 1 be completed as per the proposed schedule. However, given the current economic outlook and Council’s ongoing review and deferral of its discretionary capital spending staff cannot recommend that at this time,” reads city staff’s direction note to council, advice which was heeded by council in its vote on Monday.
Future plans for the park also include a splash pad, community garden, terrace garden, large free play green space, wetland viewing area, picnic space and social gathering area.
