A major thoroughfare in the Town of Grand Falls-Windsor is scheduled to undergo some upgrades next summer.

That's good news for those who often use the Union Street overpass to get across town on a regular basis. Popular both as an automobile
and pedestrian crossing, the overpass has seen better days.

The sidewalk has crumbled in places, pieces of rebar are showing and there are potholes on the road itself.

Walkers navigating the sidewalk sometimes have to yield to other pedestrians and walk in the street for a short time.

“There needs to be work done on the overpass,” said Mayor Barry Manuel during the Sept. 17 regular council meeting. “We’ve been lobbying government for the past couple of years to fix that overpass up.”

The work is scheduled to be done by the provincial government and will take a month to complete.

Talks are still underway about whether the work will require a complete shutdown of the overpass or reduced by one lane at a time while the work is in progress.

In either case, detours will be necessary.

During the meeting, council assured the public and businesses will be given ample notice when the overpass work will be done.
