CORNER BROOK, N.L. — A 21-year-old man from Deer Lake was arrested in Corner Brook in the early hours of Monday morning after being found lying on the ground between two buildings in the west coast city.

The man had fled police in a vehicle, then abandoned his vehicle some distance away. That resulted in a foot patrol by Royal Newfoundland Constabular officers, leading to his arrest.

He’s charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, flight from police, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operation of a motor vehicle while blood-alcohol concentration of 80 mg or over.

The incident began about 3:30 a.m. when an RNC patrolling the downtown core of the city saw a vehicle driving on Herald Avenue in the wrong direction on the one-way road. The officer attempted to stop this vehicle, but it fled the area at a high rate of speed.

Police did not pursue, but multiple RNC units responded to the area. Within minutes, they located the suspect vehicle abandoned behind a commercial property on Park Street.

Officers searched the area on foot and located the man trying to hide.

He was arrested without incident.

He was issued a 90-day driving suspension and will appear in provincial court in November. The vehicle was impounded.

In the St. John’s area, it was a busy Thanksgiving Sunday night for RNC patrol officers.

There were several traffic stops during the evening and overnight.

Four vehicles were impounded and a number of suspended drivers were issued summary offence tickets for various violations of the Highway Traffic Act.
