A number of top officials at Labrador Grenfell Health have moved on in recent weeks. Barbara Molgaard Blake, the interim CEO, announced she will be leaving the organization earlier than anticipated to take a new job, and top officials in the communications and finance departments are leaving as well. Haggie said “it’s just an unfortunate co-incidence.”

He said it’s very unusual now to get one person to move into a job and stay there for 35 years and most people have a lifespan in a particular job of around 5 to 8 years.

“I think what you see is a combination of retirement, move for family reasons and moves for career development happening around the same time,” he said. “Set against the background of a fixed term for the CEO which expired last September.”

He said part of the delay in finding a new permanent CEO is the new independent appointment commission the province brought in last year.

“They look after CEO recruitment and I think that process through them has taken somewhat longer than in previous times when it’s been more of a shorter process,” he said. “But it’s independent, its merit based and totally arm’s length from government. So I think that delay is worth that level of independence.”
