The Sobeys grocery store on Kelsey Drive was the scene of a brazen and destructive break-in early Monday morning in the capital city.
According to overnight grocery clerk Cody O’Keefe, one of three to four employees in the store at the time, there was a very loud bang around 5:30 a.m. At first he thought a shelf had fallen over, but as he and others moved towards the front of the store he witnessed at least three individuals using a piece of heavy equipment to gain entry to the business.
It appears as though the assailants were targeting an ATM just inside destroyed section of the storefront as it was thoroughly dismantled on the sidewalk outside.
O’Keefe, from St. John’s, says he and the other employees were asked to stay on the scene until police arrived. He says there were no injuries to staff.
An unnamed employee informed media that there would be no further comment from the local store and directed inquiries to Sobeys head office in Stellarton, N.S.
Another employee told The Telegram that the store would remain closed for a couple of hours while the damage gets cleaned up and a temporary wall could be put in place.
More to come.
