ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Environment Canada is warning of the potential for heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms on the southeast portion of the Avalon Peninsula today.

The weather office says its meteorologists are monitoring a cluster of storms south of the island and warn that rainfall rates could exceed 20 millimeters or more per hour, resulting in flash flooding and water build up on roads.

As with any thunderstorm, there's also a danger of lightning strikes, high winds, and large hail.
