Q: If I'm keeping my own cannabis plants, can I give some to my neighbour?
A: Once cannabis legalization comes about later this year, Newfoundland and Labrador will let you keep up to four plants at home. If you want to harvest from those and make a joint for yourself, that's not outside the law.
You could also share up to 30 grams with your neighbour (it's important to keep personal possession limits in mind, but a couple of standard joints is within limit).
That said, the provincial Control and Sale of Cannabis Act is clear you absolutely can't ever sell what you harvest. "The legislation very clearly outlines the fact that you can have social sharing," said Finance Minister Tom Osborne, during debate in the House of Assembly on May 31. "You can't sell for profit. You can't have monetary gain. But if you can legally have your four plants and you have a guest come in and however you - I'm not sure what the process is to turn that into an edible, or to turn it into a joint or whatever it's called today. If you wanted to share it, yes, you can share it with guests in your home."
Just an added reminder, though, that you can't have it at all if you're under 19.
