ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Citing safety concerns due to increased traffic flow and the amount of snow still on the ground, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD), is taking a “phased-in” approach to the reopening of schools in the metro region, a press release from the NLESD said.

All high schools will open on Monday, while an announcement on the opening of other schools can be expected Monday.

High school students who use alternative transportation will be contacted by the school or by the contractors regarding transportation.

Some bus routes have been adjusted due to ongoing snow clearing. For information on adjustments to bus routes, the school district asks people to visit nlesd.ca/schools/busing/soe.jsp

These adjustments will be in place between January 27 to January 31. There will be an update regarding the following week.

Parents and guardians are asked not to bring their vehicles to the bus stop and to take any necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all children.

Because new locations may be required due to snow, drivers are being asked to slow down and be extra vigilant.

Meanwhile, thanks to a weather system arriving early Monday morning, a number of schools of the province's west coast and parts of central are closed for the morning or delaying opening by two hours. A complete list is available at nlesd.ca/schools/statusreport/index.jsp
