The province’s high sheriff will take on a second role as of next month, when he also becomes superintendent of prisons.
Justice and Public Safety Minister Andrew Parsons announced Friday that Dan Chafe will become acting superintendent of prisons for Newfoundland and Labrador 0n May 1, taking over from Don Roche, who is retiring.
“The acting appointment as superintendent is intended to balance immediate operational needs with the time required to conduct a job competition,” Parsons’ department stated in a news release.
Chafe will continue as high sheriff until an acting high sheriff can be named, the department told The Telegram.
The superintendent of prisons is responsible for five correctional facilities and two lockups across the province, and the safe and humane custody of adults in them.
The high sheriff is the chief enforcement officer of the province‘s Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and provincial court, and manages staff at 14 court locations.
