A house was damaged by fire early Tuesday morning when heat from an unattended charcoal barbecue apparently ignited nearby debris and sent flames up the side of the home.
Luckily a resident of the Spruce Avenue home was still awake, spotted the blaze and called 911.
When firefighters from the St. John’s Regional fire department arrived on scene, the flames had already blackened the house near the front porch before the fire was put out.
The three female occupants of the home were escorted from the home until it was safe for them to re-enter.
There were no injuries and damage was confined to the exterior of the house.
