An injured hiker had to be carried about one-and-a-half kilometres off the East Coast Trail Saturday after he broke his leg on the trail near Petty Harbour.
The injury happened early Saturday afternoon and members of the Rovers Search and Rescue team as well as Eastern Health paramedics were sent out to find and treat the injured man.
A cormorant helicopter from the 103 Search and Rescue squadron in Gander was called in but it was delayed arriving to the rescue area as it had to divert around several thunderstorms on the way. Once on scene, the chopper was prevented from removing the injured man from the area because of heavy fog and low cloud cover.
That meant rescuers had to carry the stretchered victim out the trail to Petty Harbour. It took several hours for the trek as the trail was described as difficult and rocky.
The victim was finally taken to hospital just after 10 p.m. Saturday night.
