An injured mountain biker had to be rescued by helicopter Saturday afternoon after he plunged over a ten-metre embankment on the East Coast Trail.
The incident happened within sight of Quidi Vidi Village but the terrain in the area prevented St. John’s Regional firefighters from removing him via the trail. SJRFD paramedics hiked in to the injured biker and tended to the man until a Universal helicopter arrived on scene carrying personnel from the fire department’s high-angle rescue team.
The injured man was then lifted from the trail in a basket under the chopper and transported directly to the Universal hangar where he was placed in an ambulance for transport to the Health Sciences Centre.
The man’s injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
