The MOU was signed by the Innu leadership — Innu Nation Grand Chief Anastasia Qupee, Deputy Innu Nation Grand Chief Simeon Tshakapesh, Sheshatshiu First Nation Chief Eugene Hart and Mushuau Innu First Nation Chief John Nui — and Premier Dwight Ball during a meeting in St. John’s Wednesday.
The MOU describes steps towards an inquiry under either the Public Inquiries Act, 2006 or through another mutually agreed mechanism, the province said in a news release
The province and the Innu leadership will seek to reach an agreement by July 31 on the terms of reference specifying the process and objectives of the inquiry. Who or what body will lead the inquiry will also be announced by the end of the month
According to the province, Ball and Qupee will jointly approach the federal government to seek its participation in the inquiry and will make an effort to have the inquiry initiated by Sept. 30.
