After more than a year of evading police, Joshua Melvin Cormier of Flat Bay was taken into custody in Stephenville on Thursday.

He was wanted for charges of assault, uttering threats, disqualified driving, mischief and breaching court orders, according to a prepared release from the RCMP.

It was about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday that Bay St. George RCMP officers were patrolling in Stephenville and spotted Cormier.

When he saw police he fled the scene and that’s when officers set up a containment perimeter in the area.

RCMP Police Dog Services attended and a search of the area was conducted through several backyards and fields. Police Service Dog Axel located Cormier hiding in a wooded area along the Hansen Highway.

He was arrested without further incident and was brought to court Friday to answer to all outstanding charges but the result of court was not available at press time.
