Kenmount Road construction expected to be finished by week’s end

A greatly-anticipated change has come to fruition today as the new intersection of Polina Road and Kenmount Road in front of the Avalon Mall commence operation at 7 a.m. today. The City of St. John’s made the announcement on its webpage this morning and are urging motorists to proceed through this area with caution as they become accustomed to the new configuration. This area has been a great cause for concern in recent years as motorists trying to gain entry Kenmount Road have been involved in a vast amount of accidents. The addition of this set of lights and making a new entrance to the mall should alleviate that.

Kenmount Road area commuters should soon expect some relief.

St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen said at Monday evening’s council meeting he expects roadwork on Kenmount Road to be completed by the end of the week.

He said the Polina Road realignment will be completed Tuesday, while the rest of the work in the area should be finished by week’s end if weather co-operates.

He said the work is on schedule, thanks partly to city council allowing construction crews to work outside of regularly allowed hours in order to get the work done.

“We’re very pleased that this is going to be completed soon, and with the future opening of the Team Gushue Highway exchange in, out to Topsail Road, I think you’re going to see a big difference on the Kenmount Road and on the Prince Philip Drive traffic volumes.”
