LEWISPORTE, N.L. — A community can be defined on how it supports each other through adversity.
Lewisporte Mayor Betty Clarke pledges her community will be pulling together to help the families affected by a horrific vehicle accident early Sunday morning.
Around 4 a.m., an SUV heading towards Gander was struck in a head-on collision with a pickup truck that was travelling west. In the collision, the 65-year-old male driver and a 63-year-old woman sitting in the front passenger seat were pronounced dead on the scene.
A pair of passengers in the backseat of the SUV were taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the 20-year-old driver of the truck was also transported to hospital.
In the release from the RCMP, it was revealed they were investigating if the man was impaired at the time of the crash and took a blood sample while at the scene.
Clarke called Sunday a devastating day after she heard the news. The victims were well-known around Lewisporte.
“We are a close knit community,” said the mayor. “Everyone knows everybody and everyone is sad about what happened.”
She said Lewisporte is a town like many in Newfoundland and Labrador.
When something tragic happens to a member of their community, they’ll rally in any way they can to help.
They support themselves and this incident will be no different, according to the mayor.
“We’ll pull together to help the family,” she said.
The incident is still under investigation by the RCMP.
