Kyle Mercer, 27, of Upper Island Cove was charged with a number of offences following an incident Friday evening after Bay Roberts RCMP responded to a call that a man, believed to be intoxicated, was causing damage with an axe to items on a residential property.
Prior to the arrival of police, the suspect left the residence in a vehicle, but was located a short distance away by Bay Roberts RCMP.
Mercer, who showed signs of alcohol impairment, was arrested and taken into police custody, the RCMP stated in a news release. He was taken to the detachment for breath testing and refused to provide a breath sample, police said.
He is charged with impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of mischief and making threats.
