TORBAY, N.L. — One man was taken to hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation following a house fire in Torbay Wednesday night.

The fire was reported just after 8 p.m., with multiple calls coming in to 911. When firefighters from the Torbay Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) arrived on scene, there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the home.

The victim escaped the blaze and was treated on scene before being taken away by ambulance.

Capt. Kenneth Dodd of the TVFD, who was the first officer on scene, said they had the fire knocked down in about 10 minutes, but the home had suffered extensive damage. He also added the victim’s injuries did not appear life-threatening.

A dog and cat that were outside the home were uninjured.

No information was available as to what started the fire. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating.
