Contract talks between Metrobus and members of Amalgamated Transit Union 1462 have broken off, union president Paul Churchill said Monday.

The contract expired May 31, 2019, and the union and Metrobus will now go to conciliation.

Churchill declined to go into details as to what issues caused the breakdown in negotiations.

The union represents 130 drivers and maintenance workers.

During its last strike, Metrobus workers were off the job for 13 weeks in 2010-11.

If conciliation doesn’t succeed March 10-11, the workers could be in a strike position 15 days later.

The news comes at a time when Metrobus has seen a nine per cent growth over last year and is working towards making improvements announced in a recent study. It was also just announced income support recipients would receive free passes through a pilot project.

Conciliation was requested by the union, Powell said.
