MHA Scott Reid of St. George’s-Humber sees several good things happening in communities in his district.

However, he recognizes challenges in transportation and infrastructure that he feels can be overcome with all levels of government working together.

Reid feels positive about the area and the potential for the future as it relates to agriculture, tourism and even land development.

He was asked: “What are the five most important things that have happened in your district in 2018?”

The cannabis operation being set up in Barachois Brook bodes well for the future and creating some long-term jobs. Because of it there seems to be a renewed confidence in the area.

A significant amount of roadwork was done in the district, especially Codroy Valley and Bay George; however more needs to be done and the improvements in transportation remains a priority into the future in these areas, along with Pasadena and the Trans-Canada Highway.

The divestiture by Small Crafts and Harbours to transfer the port in St. George’s to the town and turn it into a marina is seeing millions of dollars being invested there. This will go well towards future development in terms of tourism for Sandy Point, linked in with the Mi’kmaq museum.

Pasadena is seeing continued growth but there are issues with a boundary expansion and water and sewer service needs to be dealt with and an expansion to a very active seniors club in the town. That town, along with Pynn’s Brook, Humber Valley Resort, Humber Village, Little Rapids and Steady Brook all have issues related to growing towns. We’re working to improve facilities and infrastructure and already seeing cooperation with fire service for the whole Humber Valley area.

There’s a renewed interest in the potential of agriculture with young people asking more questions about it and a lot of entrepreneurial interest. Also, a farmers’ market is being explored in Stephenville so that will give avenues for people to sell their product.
